"Do you know what it feels like to become insane, doctor? It's like a war between being told who you are and knowing who you are. Which do you think wins?" Dr. Martin Harris
If Liam Neeson is not careful, he’s going to get a reputation for kicking Eurotrash butt. And every action fan surely enjoys watching the big man in badass mode. Like Matt Damon, having a talented actor unleash his inner warrior adds weight and intelligence to proceedings, even if that is feather light to begin with.

I originally caught UNKNOWN at the Berlin Film Festival, which was the most superficial movie over the fortnight, but also secretly, one of the most fun. If you like Liam Neeson doing his TAKEN shizzle (without the dubious politics), then you’ll enjoy this. He’s an amnesiac scientist who gets sucked into a conspiracy while visiting Germany for a conference. I was wondering how an academic could fend off lethal assassins, but it eventually gets explained. Instantly forgettable, and quite frankly a bit stoopid, but was a nice little antidote to some of the pseudo-art nonsense I sat through.
The amnesiac thing has been done better by Mr. Damon & co., but the plot device used reasonably competently is a nifty way of allowing the audience to learn as the protagonist does. Here, it’s the old school reason – a bump on the head. The film would’ve lost me there, had it not been part of an impressive car crash. And that is what the movie does very well – is keeps up the pace, like the filmmakers themselves were being chased when putting it together. Berlin is made to look cool, and there is beauty all around in the presence of Diane Kruger and January Jones – who are tougher than most movie heroines in this genre. This is slickly made b-movie schlock, and sometimes that’s just what the doctor ordered.
